crontab: you are not authorized to use cron. Sorry. in HP-UX

September 25, 2018 DbAppWeb Admin

Problem

I have created a new user account (non-root user named dbappweb) on my HP-UX machine running on HP-UX 11.31. I need to schedule some file backups as a cronjob but  after login with this new user when i tried to access “crontab -e” I got the below error:

$ crontab -e
crontab you are not authorized to use cron. Sorry.

Reason

When I checked the /var/adm/cron/cron.allow file, there was no entry for the user dbappweb. A user should be added in the /var/adm/cron/cron.allow file to schedule a cronjob.

Solution

Follow the steps given below:

  • Login as root/superuser.
  • Edit the /var/adm/cron/cron.allow file.
    # vi /var/adm/cron/cron.allow
  • Add “dbappweb” at the end of the file and save the file.
    .
    .
    root
    adm
    uucp
    dbappweb
    .
    .

  • If you are already logged in as dbappweb user, you may get the below error.
    $ crontab -e
    crontab: can't open your crontab file.
  • Exit and log in again as dbappweb user, and you will be able to schedule a cronjob successfully.
