HPE DP: RMAN Backup Failed after Changing the SYS User Password of Oracle Database

September 17, 2017 DbAppWeb Admin

Problem

I have configured the RMAN backup of the oracle database on HPE Data Protector. Backup was scheduled for daily at 18:00 hrs. One day I found that the RMAN backup of the oracle database failed and when I saw the session report it was showing that the RMAN backup was failed due to an invalid username and password. The session report was showing the error shown below:

ERROR:
 ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
 CONNECT: sys/*****@databasename
[Major] From: ob2rman@testdb "databasename" Time: 08/31/17 18:00:29
	Backup of target database failed.

Reason

Oracle sys user is required to connect the HPE Data Protector to the oracle database. As per organisation policy, I have changed the password of all users of the oracle database including sys user. As the session report shows that the RMAN backup failed due to an invalid username and password so the reason the RMAN backup failed is the invalid password of the sys user.

Solution

To resolve the above problem I have updated the password of sys user in the backup configuration done for the RMAN backup of the oracle database at the HPE Data Protector end. Please follow the steps given below to update the password of sys user in the RMAN backup configuration at the Data Protector side.

  • Login to HPE Data Protector Cell Manager (CM) GUI
  • Select the Backup from the drop-down list
  • Under Backup Specification go to Oracle Server and select the Backup which you have created.
  • On the Source tab right-click on the Database Name and click on Configure
  • Now go to the Primary tab where you will find the option to update the password of the sys user.
  • Update the password of the sys user by entering the new password of the sys user and clicking on the OK button.

Now you can run your backup and it will be completed successfully.

Note: I faced the above problem on HPE Data Protector version A09.08 while taking the RMAN backup of Oracle Database 11g.
